Compulsive or damaging behaviors

Often compulsive and repetitive behaviour is a result of intrusive thoughts which can be triggered by fear or excitement. Therefore identifying the experiences that trigger this behaviour are important.

Effects of these disorders include the ability to numb feelings by rapid elevation of adrenalin levels (risk taking behaviours) or blood sugar levels (food, drugs, alcohol) or fatigue (work), hormone release (exercise or sex). Alternatively some people use self harm to gain relief from their distress by transforming it into physical pain. Some of the treatment consists of helping the individual to be able to self regulate and function in a more balanced way once the trauma underlying the behaviour is processed.

Many of these compulsive behaviours induce shame in the individual which often sets the cycle in motion again so it is important to create a safe and non judgemental environment.
