What is a psychotherapist?

Therapist, Psychotherapist or Counsellor - What do these terms mean?

Psychotherapy, or personal counselling with a psychotherapist, is an intentional interpersonal relationship used by trained psychotherapists to aid a client or patient in problems of living as defined by Wikipedia. Quite often these terms may be used interchangeably, but there are subtle differences in their meaning. Jenny Dew explains more about these different terms on rebuidlyourlife.co.uk.

What is a therapist?

A therapist is a person skilled in a particular type of therapy, usually a trained person who has undergone many years of professional and acamdemic instruction to achieve the understanding needed in their particular field of expertise. The actual term "therapist" has become more recognised and generally associated with mental health practice. Often the term therapist is used as a more casual reference to a mental health practitioner.

What does a psychotherapist do?

A psychotherapist will usually have had both psychological and psychiatric training, but they tend to concentrate on a specific field of help, such as counselling and behavior modification aspects when it comes to the treatment of clients. A psychotherapist will generally act as a guide, and a mentor, allowing the client to work through stressful or self limiting issues that may be affecting their personal, family and working life. A psychotherapist is there to listen to you, and help you to resolve issues and personal problems and difficult feelings that you are unable to deal with yourself.
