Esketamine

A breakthrough treatment specifically manufactured for treatment-resistant depression and Major Depressive Disorders (MDD), administered in the form of a nasal spray.

It is predominantly used whilst the patient is also engaging in an individual therapy programme with their individual therapist and well-being team to their enhance recovery.

  • Esketamine is a breakthrough antidepressant nasal spray designed to treat those with treatment-resistant depression. At least 2 types of antidepressants must have been trialed beforehand. It is also for those with major depressive disorder and suicidality. It is also being considered for the treatment of alcoholism.

Currently, the nasal spray is the only esketamine treatment that is approved in the UK as it has undergone sufficient clinical trials.

  • The treatment has a novel mechanism of action. This means it offers a different method than typical antidepressants on the market. It impacts the NMDA receptors and increase the amount of glutamate in the brain.

Glutamate is the most abundant neurotransmitter in the brain so administering Esketamine may increase connections between brain cells and in turn increase positive mood.

  • The duration of the esketamine treatment can vary depending on the individual and the specific condition being treated. In clinical trials, esketamine treatment for depression typically involved a short-term phase of two to four weeks, consisting of two doses per week. After the short-term phase, maintenance treatment may continue for several months.
